LANDFILL TURN LANE

The Wood County Landfill applied for and received $100,000 from an Ohio Department of Natural Resources Market Development Grant to assist in funding construction of two turn lanes on US Route 6 at the landfill site.

Construction was completed November 2006.

The turn lanes are the first in Ohio to use ground tire rubber asphalt on a highway project.  Approximately 3,000 Ohio tires were used.  This will enable the road to stay blacker longer which will melt snow quicker and vehicles to run quieter.  It will also reduce water infiltration and therefore the road will last longer.

LANDFILL METHANE GAS COLLECTION PROGRAM

With $100,000 grant funding from the Solid Waste District, the Wood County Landfill is moving forward with the installation of a methane gas utilization system

The methane gas collected from the Landfill will be used to generate electricity, using an external combustion Stirling engine.

We will be the first landfill in the U.S. to generate electricity using a Stirling engine.
