National Arbor Day was founded by J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska nature enthusiast who encouraged tree planting to prevent soil erosion and provide shade during hot summers. The first Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 and counties and individuals were given prizes for planting the most trees that day. There was an estimated 1 million trees planted in Nebraska in just one day!
Arbor Day continues to celebrate the importance of trees, tree planting, and care in every state. Check with your city to see if they are registered in the Tree City, USA program. |
